Vyjayanthimala, a former Indian actress, dancer, and parliamentarian, was born on 13 August 1936 in Triplicane, Madras Presidency, British India (present-day Thiruvallikeni, Tamil Nadu, India). With a career spanning over two decades, she has received several accolades, including two BFJA Awards and five Filmfare Awards. Vyjayanthimala began her acting career at the age of thirteen with the Tamil film Vaazhkai (1949), followed by her role in the Telugu film Jeevitham (1950).
Vyjayanthimala made her debut in Hindi cinema with the social guidance film Bahar (1951), which she headlined. She achieved her breakthrough with the romantic film Nagin (1954), which cemented her status as a leading lady in the Indian film industry. In the period drama film Devdas (1955), Vyjayanthimala played the role of Chandramukhi, a Tawaif known for her benevolent nature, and earned critical acclaim for her performance. Her acting and the film were highly praised, and Devdas is considered to be one of her best works. For her role in the movie, she was honored with the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
