Tabu completed her schooling at St. Ann’s High School in Vijayanagar Colony, Hyderabad, before moving to Mumbai in 1983. She studied at St. Xavier’s College for two years. Tabu is the younger sister of actress Farah Naaz and the niece of Shabana Azmi, Tanvi Azmi, and Baba Azmi.

In 2020, Tabu made a comeback to Telugu cinema after ten years by appearing in Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, a film directed by Trivikram Srinivas and starring Allu Arjun. She also acted in Jawaani Jaaneman (2020), a family-oriented film co-starring Saif Ali Khan, with whom she had shared screen space after two decades.

In 2022, Tabu was lauded for her performance in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, a horror-comedy directed by Anees Bazmee, in which she portrayed a double role. The film received the highest box office opening among Hindi films released in 2022. In November 2022, Tabu announced her next project, The Crew, which also stars Kareena Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.
